You might expect strong adherence on plastic surfaces such as polystyrene (i.e. EPS XPS), polyurethane sheets, polyester and hard PVC. However, good results are not achieved on plastic surfaces such as PE, PP, silicon and Teflon.
I have not finished the contents of the can but the foam dried out inside made the application pipette unusable. What can I do?
Under such conditions, Promast Pipettes spare pipette set might allow you to use the can over and over again.
If you do not have a spare pipette set, you might cut a small portion from the tip of the pipette where there is dried-out foam, to continue using your product.
Could aerosol PU foams be used for sound insulation?
Since they are close celled, aerosol foams offers heat insulation primarily. On open celled foam, Promast Flexy is more suitable for sound insulation applications.
Are aerosol PU foams resistant to high temperatures?
In many instances, the answer is no. The structure of aerosol PU foams deteriorates when exposed to heat above 90°C for a period of time. If exposed to heat 130°C or above, they can only endure a few hours.
Is the dried/hardened PU foam combustible?
Yes, very much so. PU Foam, which is an organic substance, is highly combustible when exposed to fire. The exceptions are the incombustible PU foams.
According to DIN 4102 standards B2 class foams can blow out by themselves when removed from the fire source. According to the same standards B1 class foams are resistant to inflammation for a length of time.
Can I clean the application gun with the foam cleanser?
Foam cleansers contain acetone and similar solvents. These types of solvents may dissolve the polyurethane inside the application gun but will not be able to avoid a thin film residue still to remain on the circumference. This might clog up your application gun in time.
For this reason, leaving the application gun attached on to the can would increase its lifespan.
Can I throw away the finished foam container to garbage?
Contrary to the application in many EU countries, there are no institutions in our country collecting finished aerosol cans for recycling.
Even if used fully, there is still a residue of 20-40 grams of polyurethane polymer and propellant gasses and this contains a risk of polluting the environment. For this reason, we recommend to hold the can upside-down for a while and to empty out the contents fully.
PU foam is smeared to my clothes, what would you suggest?
Do not apply PU foams with your best clothes. Clothes smeared with foam should be cleaned with a solvent such as acetone. If the foam is dried out on the clothes, unfortunately there is not much to do.
Do I have to specially prepare the surfaces before applying aerosol PU foams?
No. Just clean any grease, dirt, dust or similar substances which might harm adherence. Additionally, the application surface might be damp but it should not be frozen or icy.
What should I be careful about, when applying foam at very low temperatures?
Regardless of how low the temperature, heating the can to room temperature would increase its application performance.
Furthermore, since the humidity is considerably low at lower temperatures single component foams might encounter difficulty in drying. To eliminate this problem, dampening the application surface is a choice.

What is the average shelf-life of Aerosol PU foams?
If stored in room temperatures, they can be used 18 months after their production dates. However, if stored at higher temperatures, this period goes down. For example, if a foam is stored at 45°C or above, its shelf-life can go down as low as 4 months.
Does the dried/hardened foam have stability in very low temperatures?
Yes, in temperatures as low as -30°C PU foams are stable.
Is there a correlation between the temperature of the container and the performance of the foam?
Absolutely! That is why for maximum performance the temperature of the container is recommended to be at room temperature no matter what the ambient temperatures are. For this purpose it may be wise to leave the container at a place with room temperature before application.
What are the concrete advantages of moisturizing application surfaces?
Better adhesion strength to surfaces, faster desiccation and better cell structure are some of these advantages.
What does foam with security valve mean?
Contrary to standard rubber valves used in aerosol PU foams, mechanical valves, which never possess the risk of sticking or blocking, are called security valves in our country. As a result of this quality, mechanical valve containing PU foams can be used over and over without any blockage.
However, at this point it is important to remind that new generation rubber valves possess very low risk of sticking or blocking and thus the difference between them is significantly diminished.
PU foam is dried in my hands before I had the opportunity to clean. Is there anything I can do?
A solvent like acetone might be helpful to dissolve the dried-out PU foam. The foam dried onto the sking might take a few days to dissolve.
Does the PU Foam Can have the risk of explosion?
Since it is an aerosol product, the PU foam can contains combustible propelling gasses under high pressure. If exposed to flames directly or left at very high temperatures, like any other aerosol products, they also have the risk of exploding.
Can I smooth out the newly applied PU foam with my hands?
Since the wet PU foams contain isocyanate the contact to the skin should be kept at a minimum. In fact in many EU countries, it is compulsory to sell PU foams with complimentary gloves. Accordingly, Promast as a first in Turkey, offers complimentary disposable gloves together with foams it sells.
Can I leave the afore mentioned gun in the foam cleanser?
Since the Foam Cleanser contains very powerful solvents, it should not be kept on the gun more than 15 minutes.
Can I leave the foam gun on the aerosol can after the application?
Of course! The application gun could be left attached to the aerosol can until the content is finished completely. The alternative to that is to clean the gun with the foam cleanser.
Why is it necessary to shake aerosol foams before application?
In the can there are polyurethane pre-polymers and propelling gasses under pressure (in liquid form). Sufficient shaking enables propelling gasses and pre-polymers to become a homogenous mixture as far as possible. As a result, increased productivity from one can as well as obtaining foam with finer cell-structure is expected.
What does productivity of the foam mean?
How many liters of foam you obtain from one can is evaluated as the productivity of the foam. While the productivity varies around 25-40 liters in foams with pipette, it is around 40-65 liters in foams with gun. Increase in productivity means lowered density, thus it means decline in its mechanical qualities.
What could be the disadvantages of using foam near to the end of its shelf life?
The polyurethane pre-polymer inside the aerosol can gets thicker near to the end of the product’s shelf-life. The most significant consequence for the end-users is the decrease in foam volume (yield) which could be obtained from one can.
The foam I bought weeks/months ago did not work today, do you know why?
The valve on the can must have been clogged. You could try to clean the dried out foam from the valve using mechanical methods. To avoid this problem to reoccur, you might try to clean the wet foam inside the valve with a solvent like acetone right after the application.
Especially in warm and humid weather conditions, the part of the valve inside the can may get stuck and blocked. Under these circumstances the foam might not be used again.
The foam runs down when applying on vertical surfaces, what might be the reason?
Probably its adherence strength is below its weight. Increasing the surface areas of which it contacts might be a solution. For example the vertical adhesion chances of foams contacting not two but three surfaces would be increased.
Foams might be running by themselves from time to time. This situation is more of a formulization problem.
What is the difference between adhesive foams and standard foams?
In standard foams not the adherence performance but the filling performance has been increased. Contrarily, adhesive foams are more resisting, better adhering and less frothing foams.
What do gunned foams mean?
Gunned foams offer a lot of savings and technical advantages to craftsmen who are in the position of using foams regularly. One of the primary advantages is 50% savings which can be obtained from a can of foam. As a result, a craftsman can finish a task using less cans of foam.
Compared to standard foams, gunned foams froths less and thus enabling ideal solutions for door installations.
Another significant point is the lightness of gunned foams compared to straw foams. By this way, their vertical surface stability is higher especially in filling wide gaps.

Can I find colored foams for a special project?

What does winter foam mean?
In temperatures below + 10 °C, the pressure of the aerosol can drop. Furthermore, the thickness of the polyurethane in the can increases. Even worse, since levels of humidity are very low in cold temperatures, foams which require humidity to dry out will have hard time to harden. As a result standard foams will come out of the cans difficultly, their structure will be deteriorated and they will take too long to dry. The foam which would save you from all these troubles is the winter foam.
Winter foams not only show high performance in lower temperatures but in summer conditions where the humidity levels are very low.
Another significant detail is winter foams can be used in relatively high temperatures and during summer months.
I have to fill a deep and wide gap; can I utilize aerosol PU foams for this purpose?
Since Aerosol PU foams are single component products, they require humidity for drying/hardening. You might consider applying an initial layer and following its drying, you might apply a second layer. Alternately, you might use double component aerosol foams which do not need humidity to dry out.
Is less-frothing foam better?
Not for everybody! For a craftsman installing a door, this might be true because excessive frothing might strain the door frame. On the other hand, foams used for filling gaps, more-frothing foams could provide savings.
Each foam I purchase froths at a different rate, what is the reason for that?
For each foam you purchase, make sure which application it is formulated for. Formulation of the producer, accessories used (straw width, gun etc.) and the application area design of the foam results in many different ratios of frothing. Furthermore, same product may froth at different rates in different weather conditions.
It is advisable to apply the foam to a small surface to check its frothing rate before application.
What could be the advantages of painting over PU foams?
PU foams are not resistant to direct sunlight. With time, its color will change and its mechanical properties will weaken. Painting over PU foams will diminish these negative effects.

Do I always have to store PU foams in an upright position?
If the valve on the can and the polyurethane in it contact each other for longer periods (remember that polyurethane is a very sticky substance) the plastic and rubber parts of the valve might be stuck and blocked. To diminish this risk it is recommended to store the cans in an upright position. The good news is new generation valves are more resilient to this problem and they do not get stuck even if stored horizontally.
